The Role of DLL and EXE Files within a Computer System

March 31st, 2011 Arie Posted in Computers & Internet No Comments »

If we own a personal computer that is run by Microsoft Windows operating system, we should have been familiar with two file types that are considered very crucial in keeping the operability and healthiness of the computer system. Those two file types are executable files and dynamic link library files. The executable files that have an exe file extension are needed to run all programs within the system while the dynamic link library files are needed to provide those executable files with references to accomplish certain tasks. Both executable files and dynamic link library files always have to be in good condition in order to make all computing operations accomplished properly and correctly.

During certain program execution, executable files perform the frontend role while the dynamic link library files stand at the backend to support those executable files. Every program that runs on Windows platform needs at least one executable file. If certain program lacks its crucial executable files, it will not run properly. Since the executable files have a very crucial role in the computer operation, they have long been targeted by various malicious intruders that want to infiltrate the system to perform certain damaging activity or to steal something that is considered important. The damaging intruders are usually called viruses while the burglars that intrude the system to steal are generally called spywares. Both intruders most of the time harness certain executable files to infiltrate the system. For that reason, providing a computer system with strong antivirus and antispyware programs is an obligatory task that has to be undertaken by every computer owner.

Unlike executable files, dynamic link library files that have a dll file extension are quite rarely harnessed by malicious malwares. However, certain malwares that infiltrate the system through the executable files usually delete the original dll files within the system and replace them with fake dll files that contain harmful references. For that reason, computer owners who find one of their dll files is missing or corrupt should replace it promptly by obtaining it from the Windows installation CD or downloading it from the internet.

Tips To Extend Your Laptop’s Battery Life

November 4th, 2010 Arie Posted in Computers & Internet No Comments »

Laptops tend to lose their charm quickly when you’re constantly looking for the nearest power outlet to charge up.  How do you keep your battery going for as long as possible?  Here are 15 easy ways to do so.

1. Defrag regularly -  The faster your hard drive does its work – less demand you are going to put on the hard drive and your battery.  Make your hard drive as efficient as possible by defragging it regularly. (but not while it’s on battery of course!) Mac OSX is better built to handle fragmentation so it may not be very applicable for Apple systems.

2. Dim your screen – Most laptops come with the ability to dim your laptop screen.  Some even come with ways to modify CPU and cooling performance.  Cut them down to the lowest level you can tolerate to squeeze out some extra battery juice.

3. Cut down on programs running in the background.  Itunes, Desktop Search, etc.  All these add to the CPU load and cut down battery life.  Shut down everything that isn’t crucial when you’re on battery.

4. Cut down external devices – USB devices (including your mouse) & WiFi drain down your laptop battery.  Remove or shut them down when not in use.  It goes without saying that charging other devices (like your iPod) with your laptop when on battery is a surefire way of quickly wiping out the charge on your laptop battery.

5. Add more RAM - This will allow you to process more with the memory your laptop has, rather than relying on virtual memory.  Virtual memory results in hard drive use, and is much less power efficient. Note that adding more RAM will consume more energy, so this is most applicable if you do need to run memory intensive programs which actually require heavy usage of virtual memory.

6. Run off a hard drive rather than CD/DVD – As power consuming as hard drives are, CD and DVD drives are worse.  Even having one in the drive can be power consuming.  They spin, taking power, even when they?re not actively being used.  Wherever possible, try to run on virtual drives using programs like Alcohol 120% rather than optical ones.

7.  Keep the battery contacts clean: Clean your battery’s metal contacts every couple of months with a cloth moistened with rubbing alcohol.  This keeps the transfer of power from your battery more efficient.

8. Take care of your battery – Exercise the Battery.  Do not leave a charged battery dormant for long periods of time.  Once charged, you should at least use the battery at least once every two to three weeks. Also, do not let a Li-on battery completely discharge. (Discharing is only for older batteries with memory effects)

9. Hibernate not standby – Although placing a laptop in standby mode saves some power and you can instantly resume where you left off, it doesn’t save anywhere as much power as the hibernate function does.  Hibernating a PC will actually save your PC’s state as it is, and completely shut itself down.

10. Keep operating temperature down - Your laptop operates more efficiently when it’s cooler.  Clean out your air vents with a cloth or keyboard cleaner, or refer to some extra tips.

11. Set up and optimize your power options – Go to ‘Power Options’ in your windows control panel and set it up so that power usage is optimized (Select the ‘max battery’ for maximum effect).

12. Don’t multitask – Do one thing at a time when you’re on battery.  Rather than working on a spreadsheet, letting your email client run in the background and listening to your latest set of MP3′s, set your mind to one thing only.  If you don’t you’ll only drain out your batteries before anything gets completed!

13. Go easy on the PC demands – The more you demand from your PC.  Passive activities like email and word processing consume much less power than gaming or playing a DVD.  If you’ve got a single battery charge – pick your priorities wisely.

14. Get yourself a more efficient laptop -  Laptops are getting more and more efficient in nature to the point where some manufacturers are talking about all day long batteries.  Picking up a newer more efficient laptop to replace an aging one is usually a quick fix.

15. Prevent the Memory Effect - If you’re using a very old laptop, you’ll want to prevent the ‘memory effect’ – Keep the battery healthy by fully charging and then fully discharging it at least once every two to three weeks. Exceptions to the rule are Li-Ion batteries (which most laptops have) which do not suffer from the memory effect.

How to deal with hp laptop battery plugged in not charging issue

October 29th, 2010 Arie Posted in Computers & Internet No Comments »

My dad owns a HP dv 2 Laptop which I had purchased from Bangkok. The laptop was working absolutely fine, one fine day suddenly the HP Laptop battery decided it will not charge anymore.

I tried many things, removed my battery many times and connected it again, Windows Vista only showed; ‘Plugged In Not Charging’!

I finally gave up. Thinking the battery maybe have got spoilt. But again after a month I decided to investigate.

HP has given some steps:

This document pertains to HP Notebook PCs with Windows Vista. Understanding battery charging issues If the notebook battery is not charging or the notebook does not indicate that the battery is charging, the most likely scenario is that the battery itself is operating correctly, but its power management software may have become corrupt. In order to correct the problem, you will need to uninstall and reinstall the power management software by using the Device Manager. This document will explain how to uninstall and reinstall the ACPI Battery listings in Windows Vista, as well as how to obtain and install updated BIOS files, if needed to correct other battery issues. Uninstalling and reinstalling power management software in Windows Vista In order to correct problems with the battery’s power management software, follow the steps below. HP PAVILION DV2000 SERIES Laptop Battery

1. Click Start and type device in the search field, then select Device Manager.

2. Expand the Batteries category.

3. Under the Batteries category, right-click the Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery listing, and select Uninstall . WARNING: Do not remove the Microsoft AC Adapter driver or any other ACPI compliant driver.

4. On the Device Manager taskbar, click Scan for hardware changes . Alternately, select Action > Scan for hardware changes.

Windows will scan your computer for hardware that doesn’t have drivers installed, and will install the drivers needed to manage your battery’s power. The notebook should now indicate that the battery is charging.

The problem is not in HP actually Window Vista did that for many other brands too.I did what HP said, but it didn’t workout for me. My HP Laptop battery did not charge.

Finally after a lot of research, I did the following:

Run HP live and support on your laptop.
Click on check Battery Health.
See if there is any Genuine fault in your battery.
If its shows OK or good, Goto the HP website.
Click on the driver updates for your HP Laptop.
Check your laptop series, its mentioned under your laptop.
Update your BIOS.
Once your BIOS is updated, Restart your Laptop.
You will now notice that the Laptop Battery has again started charging.
Yes it works! It worked for me!
Allow your battery to completely charge.
Don’t switch on your laptop till the battery charges completely.

Finally your ‘Plugged In, Not Charging’ issue will be over in Vista. I wonder who is at fault HP who cannot handle Vista or Windows who created Vista which don’t allow Laptop’s to handle them.

Charge A Laptop Battery Without A Charger

October 23rd, 2010 Arie Posted in Computers & Internet No Comments »

Without your AC charger/adapter, you may feel like your laptop is next to worthless. After all, not only do you not have a way to charge the battery in your laptop, you don’t even have a way to run your computer via a wall outlet. While new technologies are being developed every day in the area of mobile power solutions (including Intel’s research into wireless electrical transmissions), there aren’t many current alternatives to charging your laptop battery without a charger. If your problem is that you are without your original charger (which is what normally comes with a new laptop), here are some workarounds you can try that will keep your laptop humming. Keep in mind, though, that they cost money and require an advanced purchase, in which case it may be just as economical and convenient to buy a new charger from your laptop’s manufacturer.

Use a universal power adapter. This is perhaps the most obvious solution to your battery woes. Readily found at most retail outlets that carry electronics, a universal power adapter can range anywhere in price from $30 to $100 (or more, depending on how fancy you get). The adapter comes with multiple tips, one of which will likely fit your laptop’s charging port. When plugged in, the adapter will not only power your laptop, but will charge its battery as well.

Use a universal auto/air adapter. If you’re the road-warrior type who spends more time in your car than at a desk, this might be the sensible solution for you. An auto adapter is similar to a regular power adapter, except it has a modified end that plugs into your car’s cigarette lighter. The adapter will keep you powered while in your car (or inflight if it’s a combination adapter), and will simultaneously charge your laptop so you’re ready for those occasions when you do have to leave your car or plane for the real world.

Buy an external laptop battery charger. These are standalone devices that do not plug into your laptop. Rather, you take the battery out of your laptop, attach it to the charger, plug the charger into an electrical outlet, and rejuice your battery that way. When fully charged, you reinsert the battery back into your laptop. External chargers are usually brand and model specific, so make sure you get one that matches your laptop’s specs. One advantage to an external battery charger is that you can charge spare batteries without tying up your laptop.

Lap Desk ? Ergonomic Pillow for your Laptop

October 17th, 2010 Arie Posted in Computers & Internet No Comments »

Lap Desk – Ergonomic Pillow for your Laptop

What is a Lap Desk?  Why do I need one? I will try to answer these questions in this article.

A Lap Desk is indeed as it sounds, a desk for your lap. The Lap Desk is mainly used for working with your laptop on your lap but can also be used for writing, reading, drawing and many other activities that require a flat surface to work on.
The concept exists for years way before the age of the laptop computer, in the past , it was mainly used for disabled individuals to be able to read , write and eat using a table on their lap.

In today’s age where mobility is the key, laptops exists in almost every home, since notebook prices are decreasing every day, it is almost cheaper to buy a laptop computer rather than the old fashioned desktop.
Laptops were given their names because they were originally designed to work with on ones lap. The fact is most of today’s laptop are rather heavy, tend to overheat and might be spreading radiation to some extent.

This is where the Lapdesk comes in.
The Lapdesk has numerous advantages:

Raising the Laptop computer and therefore releasing strain from the neck and back. Isolating the Lap from the heat generated from the Laptop. Leaning the laptop at an angle easier for viewing and typing. Cushioning the bottom surface to make using your laptop more comfortable. Allowing the use of an external mouse while using your computer on your lap.

There are quite a bit of Lap Desk types, some are firm and some soft, some wider than others and some compact enough that they can fit right into your laptop back.

So how would one choose?

The answer is very simple, it can be said that the bigger the Lapdesk will be , the more comfortable it will be to work on.  But you must remember that when buying a large Lap Desk you will lose the mobile advantage of carrying it around with you.
If you intend to use your laptop mostly on the road, you might be better off choosing a more compact Lap Desk.

Most Lapdesks range from 30$ to 120$, they can easily be bought online and shipped all over the world.

Enjoy your Laptop and beware, the Lap Desk can make you addicted to working at home.
